Safety Procedures to Keep In Mind

Some of the best vacations or relaxing weekends can be had on a boat. Accidents do happen, however, and when they do it is best to be prepared. Most of the items on this list are quick and easy to check every time your vessel hits the water, and some of these safety steps should be kept in mind for certain situations no matter if you have guests on board or not. Employ these safety measures before, during, and after you sail

Before Departure

Check Weather Conditions
You most likely have already done this while planning a water-bound holiday, but make sure you double check once again before departing. Weather conditions can change in an instant, and you do not want to find yourself in the middle of a storm while trying to enjoy some relaxation time.

Check for Required Safety.
The Coast Guard requires anyone sailing to have certain safety items on board. These items should be accounted for every time you set sail, and they can be kept on board to be stored when your vessel is not on the water. The list of items the Coast Guard requires is:

· Life jackets
· Throwable flotation device
· Horn or sound-producing device
· Fire extinguishers
· Flares or other visual distress signals
· Operational navigation lights

Perform Engine Checks. Ensure that your engine is working properly before you take off. This preventative maintenance takes some time before every excursion, but it is nothing compared to what you will go through if you experience engine troubles on the water.· Check lubricating oil

· Check fuel level
· Check the function of buzzers on engine panel
· Verify cooling water flow
· Check for oil pressure
· Attach kill switch lanyard if applicable

Implement a Float Plan. Have a point of contact on shore who knows when you are setting sail, where you are going, and when you plan to arrive/return. This person should be contacted with updates if problems arise and your plan changes.
On the Water.Drink Responsibly. Accidents happen at any time, but they are more likely to happen when inhibitions are lowered. Have fun, but remember that you are still on the water and limit your drinking to an appropriate level.

Keep an Eye on the Weather. Though you should have checked the weather beforehand, you should still keep an eye out for weather which looks concerning. Use your best judgement and take shelter at the nearest harbor or marina if you do not think you should keep sailing.
Know Where the Nearest Harbor Is. If you do run into a problem while on the water, you should know where the safest harbor is. Do not rely on searching for a harbor you do not know the exact location of when you need help or safety.
At the Dock.

Moor Boat Securely. Be sure the water craft is secured at the bow, stern, spring lines, and fenders. Also make sure the lines are protected from chafe. Connect Shore Power Cable. Double check that the battery charger is connected and switched on. Check that the power cable is protected from chafe. Ensure that the inverter is turned off if it needs to be. Close Float Plan. Let your contact know that you have arrived or returned to your destination safely.

Everything You Need to Know About Winter Storage

If you live in an area where your boat needs to be stored for the winter, these tips will help you know which storage option is best for you and keep you boat safe and well-kept over the winter.

Storage Options

Outdoor Storage. Outdoor storage is the cheapest option when it comes to storing your boat for winter. While outdoor storage is virtually cost free, it has multiple drawbacks. It is absolutely necessary to have a well-fitting cover because the boat will be continually exposed to the harsh elements of winter. A boat takes up space in your yard and might be seen as an eyesore. You also need to arrange for transportation to take your vessel to and from the dock.

Boat Storage Facilities. Though not free like outdoor storage, boat storage facilities are relatively inexpensive and easy to find. And unlike outdoor storage, boat storage facilities keep boats away from the elements. You still do need to find transportation to and from the dock, though, and larger vessels will not fit in a standard storage unit.

Dry Stack Storage. Dry stack storage is usually located near a dock, so you do not need to find a way to transport the boat to and from the dock. This type of storage is typically stored in a warehouse to keep it out of the elements, but storage racks may be kept outdoors in some situations and leaves boats susceptible to the elements. Dry stack storage is not as cost effective as other options, and larger boats will not fit in dry stack storage.

Indoor Boat Storage. Often times, indoor boat storage includes free transportation of vessels along with maintenance and monitored security. These types of storage facilities can accommodate vessels of any size while keeping them out of the elements. However, these perks come at a price as this is the most costly storage option.

Boat Preparation

Change Oil. Water can find its way into a boat’s oil whether it is through cracks in the tank or from condensation. This water can corrode your tank over the winter and cause damage. Before storing your boat for the winter, you should always change out the oil.

Drain Coolant System. Flush out the coolant system in the boat and refill with diluted antifreeze to keep parts of the engine from freezing and protected from corrosion.

Spray with Fogging Oil. Spray your engine with fogging oil according to the manufacturer’s instructions to protect the engine’s moving parts from the winter cold.

Remove Drive Belts. Drive belts kept under tension for a long period of time will crack under stress, so remove your drive belts for winter storage to prevent damage.

Disconnect Battery. Your battery can drain and die over the winter. Avoid this by disconnecting the battery and topping it off with distilled water to make sure it is ready to go in the spring.

Grease Steering Mechanism. Greasing the steering mechanism ensures that all parts are all running smoothly when it is time to take the vessel out again in the spring.

Fill the Gas Tank. An empty tank can lead to condensation buildup and consequently corrosion. Fill your tank with gasoline stabilizer to make sure the fuel is ready in the spring.

Clean Up Interior. Be sure all electronics are moved, all water tanks are emptied, any organic upholstered materials are removed, and antifreeze is added to indoor pipes.

Wash and Wax. Prevent corrosion on your boat’s body by thoroughly cleaning, drying, and waxing the outside.

Best Deep Sea Fishing Around the World

While fishing can be a relaxing pastime on still, quiet waters, deep sea fishing is an invigorating sport bound to get the blood pumping. No matter if you are a deep sea fishing enthusiast or just getting a taste of the sport, you must check these destinations off of your list of places to fish. Sail your own deep sea fishing yacht or charter a yacht when you arrive at your destination.

Phuket, Thailand. Phuket offers a wide array of fish for you to catch including sea bass, marlin, tuna, and many more. Enjoy the clear blue waters as you fight the trophy-sized fish as they are put in the boat. For ideal fishing, consider taking an excursion during July or October.

Cape Town, South Africa. If you are looking for tuna, you will find tuna fishing near Cape Town. Any time of year is suitable for fishing at this destination, but you will find the best yield of tuna between September and June.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. As the Marlin Capital of the World, Cabo San Lucas is the place to be if you are looking to catch the sport fish. Do not plan on keeping your catch if you fish for marlin, though. Cabo San Lucas has a strict catch and release policy on the fish, so bring your camera to remember the monster you real in. If you wish to keep your catch, you can also fish for dorado or yellowfin tuna.

Limón and Puntarenas, Costa Rica. A wide variety of fish await you in Costa Rica. Depending on where you choose to drift, you can find mackerel, tuna, marlin, wahoo, rooster fish, and countless others. Steer clear of June and July when fishing in the Caribbean, and avoid September to November on the Pacific side of the Costa Rica.

Sicily, Italy. Sicily is the premier fishing spot of the Mediterranean. In Sicily’s crystal clear waters you will find tuna, swordfish, grouper, and amberjack among others. While in Sicily, take advantage of your opportunity to experience the exhilaration of spearfishing.

Victoria, Australia. It is quite simple: go to Victoria to fish for sharks. You will find a wide variety of sharks there including, but not limited to the great hammerhead, bronze whaler, and gummy shark. If you do not think fishing for sharks poses enough of a challenge for you, consider the fact that you will be fighting the Bass Straight waves while trying to reel in your catch.

Madeira, Portugal. Crowned as one of the best fishing destinations in the world, you are all but guaranteed to be pleased with the fish you will catch. Journey to Madeira between May and September for the best chance of catching blue and white marlins, shark, mackerel, or giant tuna.

Florida Keys, USA. Start your fishing expedition in the Florida Keys with Marquesas Keys located on the west coast of Key West. There you will find the premier spot to hook sharks and barracudas. For general fishing in the Florida Keys, visit between August and May, but do some research ahead of time to find out a more opportune fishing time for the fish of your choice.

Tips for Selling Your Boat in Record Time

There are many reasons to sell your water craft, whether it be financial troubles, downgrading to something smaller with less maintenance, or upgrading to the biggest, shiniest, newest boat you can lay your hands on. Just like anything else, you need to put your best foot forward when it comes to marketing and selling your possession. No matter if you have a speedboat, yacht, or pontoon, these tips will make any vessel stand out on the market.

Make it Shine

First impressions make the biggest difference in the world. Perspective buyers should be shocked and awed as soon as he or she lays eyes on your boat. That shock and awe comes when the boat is reflecting the sun as much as the water it sits on. There is a simple trick that achieves this level of glistening glory. You can wash and wax your boat to perfection, but when someone calls and says they will be over in a half hour to look at your vessel, sellers are not left with many options. Use spray-on furniture wax in a pinch. It does not last for much more than a day, but it makes a lasting impression.

Touch Up the Undercarriage.

Even though you do not see the bottom of the watercraft when it is on the water, a fresh paint job makes it look much cleaner and more eye-catching when the buyer sees it out of the water. Take a look at all of the other areas of the boat where the paint gets worn off and touch up anything unsightly.

Start Your Engines.

Try to fire up the engines within the hour the perspective buyer is expected to arrive. This will help insure that the engine will start cleanly without any sputtering or stalling. Even if the engine is in excellent condition, a bulky start will leave a bad taste in the buyer’s mouth.

Clear the Decks.

Be sure there is nothing inside the storage compartments or on the decks of the boat other than the items which are absolutely essential, such as safety gear. Not only does this make the craft more visually appealing, but it also brings its spaciousness and storage capacity to the forefront.

A-Listers Only. When it comes to taking the vessel out for a test drive, limit the number of passengers the buyer is allowed to bring along. This ties into the illusion of spaciousness. If the deck is cluttered while the buyer is out on their test drive, they may be deterred from buying the boat because it does not seem like much else will fit on board. Keeping the number of guest riders to a minimum also limits the weight during a test drive, so it will handle much more easily while the buyer has it out on the water.

Attribute it to Your Lifestyle. The inevitable question is going to come up when selling a water craft: Why are you selling? Even though the answers may be endless, you can simply tell your buyer that you are selling your boat due to a lifestyle change. It is ambiguous, but most people will not ask any further questions at the risk of possibly offending you.

Market, Market, Market. No one is going to come looking to buy your boat if no one knows it is for sale. Know where your perspective buyers will probably be coming from, and market nationally instead of locally. Choose an online venue such as AdamSea to market your water craft and reach more perspective buyers than using the classifieds in a local paper. AdamSea helps buyers connect to sellers in a convenient setting where everyone can easily find exactly what they are looking for.
